Louvre Autumn Sailing Series in its 11th year

The annual Louvre Autumn Sailing Series has seen excellent conditions so far during the first races in Guernsey, organised by the Guernsey Yacht Club.

This year the handicapped race challenge involves seven classes of yachts and dinghies accruing points over several weekends throughout September and October. The series will culminate in all classes racing together on the 26th October followed by a prize-giving.

Long-term sponsorship from Louvre Group has made this series possible for over a decade and last month’s races took place in favourable conditions with more to come.

‘Winds were pleasantly light for the first two races. However, by the third race we were enjoying gusty force five winds allowing for some exhilarating sailing. White Rabbit, Blackjack and Fandangle are certainly ones to watch,’ says Sam Watson, Guernsey Yacht Club Committee Member.

Following last year’s successful trial, a windsurfing class has been included again in the series with five participants battling it out in the surf each week.

‘Having support from Louvre Group and other corporate sponsors is really important for the club. Last year the funds allowed us to secure the deposit for a new committee boat and this year the club has contributed towards eight new international standard race buoys.’ adds Mr Watson.

The new buoys have enhanced visibility compared to the old blue barrels and have subsequently improved the safety of all sailors, motor boaters and other boat users within Little Russel.

Haidée Stephens, a Director of Louvre Group comments: ‘As we live on a beautiful island, it’s no surprise that sailing is of such importance to so many islanders. Having a long-term relationship with the Guernsey Yacht Club has been very satisfying as we can see our sponsorship in action.’
